    The fall Campus Read is underway at Bismarck State College with students, faculty and staff reading 'The Complete Persepolis,' a graphic novel about a girl growing up in Iran during the Islamic revolution. Author and illustrator Marjane Satrapi introduces readers to political, historical and cultural change through the eyes of a child in this memoir of awakening maturity. Free showings of 'Persepolis,' the animated feature film based on Satrapi's book, are scheduled for 4 and 7 p.m. Oct. 27 at the Bismarck Grand Theatres. Tickets will be available Oct. 27 from the theater box office on a first-come first-serve basis. Satrapi co-wrote and co-directed the Persepolis film that received an Oscar nomination for best animated feature at the 2008 Academy Awards.

    Born in Rasht, Iran, in 1969, Satrapi immigrated to France in 1994. She attended Lyc'e Fran'ais in Tehran and studied illustration in Strasbourg, France. Satrapi's family supported the Shah's removal in 1979, but Iran became even more oppressive under Islamic rule. Marjane rebelled against this change, and, fearing for their daughter, the family sent her to Vienna at age 14. The Complete Persepolis was named to Booklist's Top 10 Graphic Novels in 2004. A Time magazine review said, " . . . Persepolis provides a glimpse into a nearly unknown way of life . . . That Satrapi chose to tell her remarkable story as a gorgeous comic book makes it totally unique and indispensable."
