Bismarck State College presents Conversations at BSC - Abraham Lincoln's 'Footprint' in North Dakota

Bismarck State College is pleased to present Conversations at BSC, a series of lectures for the public. Each 'conversation' begins with a presentation by Clay Jenkinson, and includes discussion between Jenkinson and BSC President Larry C. Skogen. Questions from the audience complete the conversation.

The Dec. 6 topic is "Abraham Lincoln's 'Footprint' In North Dakota." Lincoln never set a foot in North Dakota, but his footprint is enormous: Homestead Act, Morrill Land-Grant Colleges Act, and the railroads.

This is BSC's Distinguished Scholar of the Humanities Lecture Series held Sundays at 3 p.m. in the Sidney J. Lee Auditorium.  The purpose of the lectures is to enrich the community?s understanding of our common humanity. The public is welcome to all programs.

Dr. Larry C. Skogen is BSC's sixth president. He has taught in collegiate and military settings and worked in many management capacities for the U.S. Air Force, where he served 26 years and retired as lieutenant colonel. An instructor at the U.S. Air Force Academy, Skogen was academic dean and deputy superintendent for academic affairs at New Mexico Military Institute, Roswell. He was an educational consultant to the United Arab Emirates and inspector general of the Francis E. Warren Air Force Base in Wyoming. Skogen has a doctorate in history from Arizona State University, Tempe, MA in history from Central Missouri State University, Warrensburg, and BS in secondary education from Dickinson State University.

Jenkinson, a Rhodes and Danforth scholar, is a published author and one of the leading public humanities scholars in the United States. He hosts a nationally syndicated radio program from Bismarck, The Thomas Jefferson Hour, and works as a speaker, consultant and facilitator. Jenkinson directs The Dakota Institute of the Fort Mandan Foundation and serves on its board. He is chief consultant to the Theodore Roosevelt Center through Dickinson State University and a columnist for the Bismarck Tribune. Jenkinson has an MA from Oxford University, Cambridge, England, BA in English literature from Vanderbilt University, and BA in English from University of Minnesota.
