Bismarck, ND - The University of Mary woodwind and brass students have been sharing their love of music all semester, and are gearing up for a performance at U-Mary. The concert, which is free and open to the public, will take place at 3 p.m., Sunday, Nov. 22, 2009, in Heskett Hall.  It will feature a woodwind duo, woodwind trio, and two small brass ensembles. The music was collectively chosen by the students and their directors, Dr. Michelle Kiec and Dennis Gowen, music professors at University of Mary.

"I'm excited to perform this music. It's rewarding to be involved in the music selection process," says freshman flutist Erica Belverstone of Bismarck.

On average, the students rehearsed three hours per week to prepare for this concert. The program features a variety of music. Among the highlights will be Aaron Copland's Simple Gifts, Gary Shocker's Airheads, Samuel Scheidt's Canzon for Brass Quintet, and Fischer Tull's Canonical Trilogy. Additional works by American and European composers round out the performance.

This concert allows students to showcase their talents in a formal venue. These ensembles regularly perform outreach concerts for campus and community events. The lessons learned in these performances will travel with the performers as they continue their journeys in music. Audiences also appreciate hearing live music while the students discover how music affects communities.
