World Class Musicians to Perform at U-Mary Jazz Festival in Bismarck, ND! When the names Jon Faddis and Darmon Meader appear on the same concert program it can only mean one thing -- the best-of-the-best. Faddis has been cited by Time Out New York magazine as "the world's greatest trumpeter." The late John 'Dizzy' Gillespie, his close friend and mentor, once declared of Faddis, "He's the best ever, including me!" Mix in a little Trent Kynaston, Steve Zegree, Tom Knific and Tim Froncek and it is a 'who's-who' in jazz performing LIVE right here in Bismarck at the region's premier Jazz Festival Concert.
The 37th Annual University of Mary Jazz Festival Concert is Friday, Jan. 29, 2010, at 8 p.m. in the Bismarck Civic Center Arena. Doors open at 7 p.m. and tickets can be purchased at the U-Mary Music Department and Eckroth Music for $10. Accompanying the headliners is the Western Jazz Quartet, the award-winning University of Mary Jazz Ensemble, and the U-Mary Vocal Jazz group. The festival also includes two days of clinics with Faddis, Meader and highly respected U-Mary faculty Jan. 29-30. Taking part in the sessions are students from over 60 bands, representing more than 40 schools in the three-state region and Canada.
"This is a rare opportunity to hear some of the best jazz musicians in the world perform in concert with our university students," commented U-Mary Jazz Director Dr. David Lambert. "Faddis is the heir-apparent to Dizzy Gillespie and one of three people who was by Dizzy's bedside when he died. Darmon is chief arranger/vocalist with the multiple-Grammy-winning New York Voices. Anyone who has ever been in a vocal jazz ensemble has probably played at least one Darmon Meader arrangement. As a member of New York Voices, Meader has released numerous recordings on multiple labels including GRP, RCA/Victor, Concord and MCGJazz, which holds the group's latest release 'A Day Like This.' Meader has worked with a variety of artists including Ray Brown, Bernadette Peters, George Benson, Maureen McGovern, Don Sebesky, Nancy Wilson, Ann Hampton Calloway, Jim Hall. Paquito D'Rivera and the Count Basie Orchestra. Even though this is the first trip to Bismarck for all our guest performers, the word has gotten out in the jazz community about how much the area loves jazz, and the artists are looking forward to a warm reception no matter what the temperature outside," added Lambert.
