ArtsQuest brings 'Twilight' director to BSC

Bismarck State College ArtsQuest goes behind the scenes of the blockbuster film, "Twilight," with an afternoon screening of the film and an evening lecture by its director, Catherine Hardwicke, on April 17.

The movie starts at 3 p.m. in Sidney J. Lee Auditorium and Hardwicke's presentation begins at 7 p.m., National Energy Center of Excellence 4th floor. Both events are free to the public.

Hardwicke trained as an architect and started in film as a production designer. She designed more than 20 films, including "Vanilla Sky," "Three Kings" and "Tank Girl." At the podium, she will explore why she moved from production design to directing, how she chooses a film project, and the director's role in bringing a mega, best-selling book to the big screen.

In her presentation, Hardwicke will reference her book, "Twilight: The Director's Notebook," which will be available for purchase.

"Twilight" was adapted from the wildly popular paranormal romance novel by Stephanie Meyer. Released Nov. 21, 2008, the film version has grossed more than $380 million worldwide. It debuted at No. 1 at the box office with $70 million in gross ticket sales nationwide, making it the highest debut ever for a female director.

The movie follows the novel's storyline about a 17-year old girl whose love for a young vampire is returned in a risky relationship that places her in danger.

Hardwicke's 2003 debut as a feature film director and co-writer brought her acclaim for the award-winning movie, "Thirteen." She has since directed "Lords of Dogtown" (2005) and "The Nativity Story" (2006) and has several film projects in development and pre-production.
