For Immediate Release Tuesday, April 6, 2010 University of Mary Vocal Department to Present an Evening of Opera Bismarck, ND — Forest Gump’s momma always told him; “Life was like a box of chocolates. You never know what you’re gonna get.” If that is the case, opera takes that analogy to the next level of unpredictability. The University of Mary Vocal Arts Ensemble, under the direction of Katherine Henjum, will perform Opera: Life as Usual only Exaggerated, on Thursday, April 15, 2010, 7 p.m., in Heskett Hall in the Clairmont Center for Performing Arts. The concert is free and open to the public. Vocal arts students will perform scenes from “Hansel and Gretel,” “Tales of Hoffmann” and “Cosi fan tutte” that portray life a little exaggerated, with mischief to murder, mayhem to merriment. “Opera is such an incredible art form,” commented Henjum. “It is indeed, life as usual, only exaggerated! It is probably one of the most demanding of art forms because it requires multi-tasking — singing, often in a foreign language, memorization of text, watching the conductor, movement on stage, interacting with other characters — all while maintaining an energized, resonant vocal production that does not require amplification. The concentration needed is intense, but the payoff is enormous. It is a grand opportunity for the students to bring a character to life and grow in their understanding of this rich art form.” For more information, please contact the University of Mary Music Department at (701) 355-8301.
