Bismarck, ND — The University of Mary, America’s Leadership University, is proud to present the 2010 Fall Band Concert. One of the featured works on the University Concert Band’s upcoming performance is “Noah,” a three-movement programmatic work on the Great Flood, composed by Montana native Russ Newbury. Each movement depicts broad elements of this timeless Old Testament story, including God’s disappointment with man, Noah finding favor with God, and of course, the Flood itself.
“It’s always a treat to share this wonderful original band work with our audiences,” says conductor Dennis Gowen, director of bands at the University of Mary. “Its impact is full-throttled and memorable.”
The U-Mary Fall Band Concert is at 3 p.m. Sunday, Oct. 24, 2010, in the Our Lady of the Annunciation Chapel. It is free and open to the public.
“Working on the timpani solo, and bringing it to a high level of performance has certainly been a daunting challenge,” says student soloist and Ryder, ND, native David Starks, a senior majoring in biology with a pre-med concentration. “I know the audience will greatly enjoy this exciting piece!”
Other works on the program include Robert Longfield’s masterful transcription of Johannes Brahms’ “Hungarian Dance No. 6,” Richard Strauss’s pivotal “Festmusik der Stadt Wein”, and “A Copland Tribute” by Clare Grundman. The concert will open with “Celebration Fanfare,” composed by the newly appointed music director of the New York Pops (and long-time arranger for the Cincinnati Pops) Steven Reineke.
