Bismarck State College presents the "Picture North Dakota!" art exhibit January 10-February 15 in the Gannon Gallery in the BSC Library.
One hundred volunteers across North Dakota served as Centennial Ambassadors, coordinating a statewide photo project for the State Historical Society of North Dakota.
The state agency, headquartered at the North Dakota Heritage Center in Bismarck, is 100 years old. Picture North Dakota! was one of many commemorative activities organized by the historical society.
The historical society sent out 100 rolls of 35mm film to the ambassadors to document daily life in North Dakota on the weekend of June 23-25, 1995. The ambassadors, mostly representing their local historical societies, took the pictures themselves or arranged for a photographer. Due to interest generated in the project, the historical society also accepted photographs, negatives, and documentation donated by other photographers.
Picnics, living rooms, building, Main Street shopping, gardening, fieldwork, and ball games were among the many subjects for photographs. The film was returned to the State Historical Society for processing; each photographer received a set of prints to keep. The photographs will become a part of the Society’s archives collections.
One representative photograph from each participating county was selected for this exhibit. All photographs taken as part of this project are located in the three-ring binders that accompany the exhibit.
Picture North Dakota! is a project of the State Historical Society. The photo enlargements for this exhibit were donated by Bob’s Photo, Bismarck. Additional funding was provided by the Curtis Strand Memorial Fund, through the North Dakota Heritage Foundation. Mr. Strand, who for forty years operated Strand’s Studio in Rugby with his wife Maxine, captured the most memorable moments of their neighbor’s lives. Photographs are history made real—a legacy for families, for the community, and for all North Dakotans. Preserving this resource is the goal of the Curtis Strand Memorial Fund. Donations to this fund will assist the society in additional photographic projects.
