    Concert Program

    His Honor by Henry Filmore
Next to John Philip Sousa, the most prolific march composer of the American march style was Henry Fillmore. He wrote hundreds of marches, many under assumed names. His Honor is a perennial audience favorite with all of the characteristics that make this march sound like the American icon that is Fillmore.

Overture on an American Folk Tune by Claude T. Smith
This rousing overture was commissioned by and dedicated to the South Carolina Bandmasters Association. The work was premiered by the South Carolina All-State Band with the composer conducting. The hymn tune used in the overture is “My Shepherd Will Supply My Need” which was written in 1836, and is found in the hymnal “Southern Harmony.”

Ave Maria by Franz Biebl, transcribed by Robert Cameron
    Andrew Miller – Vocal Soloist
Ave Maria was first published in 1964 in Dortmund, Germany, for seven-part men’s voices. The version utilized in this transcription, however, is the version for mixed choir because it better matches the registration of the wind ensemble or symphonic band.
Andrew Miller is the current choir director at Bismarck State College.

    Confluence by Richard Saucedo
Confluence, in geography, describes the meeting of two or more bodies of water. The merging point of the Monongahela and Allegheny Rivers is the beginning of the Ohio River, thus forming a confluence in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. The piece is in two parts: The Allegheny Lament and Dance of the Monongahela.

A Longford Legend by Robert Sheldon
    Mike McCormack – Narrator
A Longford Legend was commissioned by the Normal Community West High School Band, Normal, Illinois, Lisa Preston, director. The piece was written in 1996 and premiered in April of that year with the composer conducting. It is based on the composer’s impressions of three poems found in a collection of 18th-century Irish street ballads, and is written as a tribute to the wonderful music of Grainger, Holst and Vaughan Williams.
Mike McCormack is the senior faculty member actively teaching at Bismarck State College and will recite each poem before each movement.

Twilight of the Gods by Andrew Boysen, Jr.
Visual Art by Erik A. Evensen
This piece was written as a consortium commission and Bismarck State College is one of the participants. The performance on November 15 will be the North Dakota premier of this composition and will be presented with the visual art designed by Erik Evensen specifically for this piece.
Twilight of the Gods depicts the story of Ragnarok, the end-of-the-world myth from Scandinavian mythology. It can be translated as “final destiny of the gods,” or “doom of the gods,” a translation used by Richard Wagner in the final part of his “The Ring of the Nibelung” operas. The story encompasses a series of events, starting with a relentless winter leading to a series of civil wars across the earth, and concluding with a great battle between the gods and their adversaries, resulting in their deaths and the destruction of the earth. The earth then rises once more, new gods take control of the heavens, and the human race is born again through two survivors.
