Homelessness is a growing yet often unnoticed problem among youth in the Bismarck-Mandan area. To increase awareness and cap off National Hunger and Homeless Awareness Week, Nov. 14-20, the University of Mary Optimist Club, in collaboration with Student Activities and Student Government, is hosting Chillin’ for Children. The all-night event is designed to focus attention on the situation and raise funds for Carrie’s Kids, an organization known for its steadfast support of homeless children.
November 20, at 9 p.m. students will gather in the North Courtyard of the University of Mary to spend the entire night outside and experience firsthand the difficulties of wintertime homelessness. Campus organizations are currently competing against each other to recruit the most participants for the event, and area businesses have already pledged financial support to encourage more students to take part.
The University of Mary Optimist Club has spent the past several weeks spreading the word on campus, securing business sponsors, and coordinating the event details. “I’m excited for everything to come together and hopefully we raise a lot of awareness on campus and in the community,” said Angel Klontz, ’14, a Williston, ND, native and chairperson of the event committee. Klontz is assisted by fellow Optimist Club members: Allison Mann, ’11, Dickinson; Steve Michlitsch, ’13, and Matt Becker, ’13, Bismarck; Liz Lee, ’14, Grand Forks; and Wes Wakefield, ’11, Devils Lake.
The event is open to all students at the University of Mary as well as members of the community, and individual donors and business sponsors are still needed. Those who would like to contribute to the cause or learn more about the event can contact Angel Klontz at (701) 770-5376, or e-mail the Optimist Club at umaryoptimistclub@gmail.com.
