Dickinson State University's Women's Voices dedicates itself to enriching the lives of women in the west river area.

Natalie Goldberg is a poet, teacher, painter, and the author of eleven books. Her classic, Writing Down the Bones: Freeing the Writer Within, a favorite with writing instructors, has been translated into fourteen languages. Writing Down the Bones is a splendid combination of Zen wisdom and down-to-earth advice about writing. Her personal favorite, Wild Mind, compassionate, practical, and humorous, contains exercises to help writers overcome procrastination and writer’s block. A resident of Sante Fe, Natalie has also written Long Quiet Highway: Waking Up in America, a memoir about her Zen teacher. For the last thirty years she has practiced Zen and taught seminars in writing as a spiritual practice. Recently her paintings, currently being shown at the Ernesto Mayans Gallery in Sante F, have received considerable notice. Her most recent book, Old Friend from Far Away, reaffirms Natalie's status as a foremost teacher of writing, and completely transforms the practice of writing memoir. At once a beautifully written celebration of the memoir form, an innovative course full of practical teachings, and a deeply affecting meditation on consciousness, love, life, and death, Old Friend welcomes aspiring writers of all levels and encourages them to find their unique voice to tell their stories. Old Friend from Far Away guides us into that state of love, where heightened attention and a rhythm of focus allow the patterns and details of the past to emerge on the page. Jack Kornfield, author of A Path with Heart states, "The brilliance of this book is that it immediately gets you writing your story. It opens the inner treasure and the inner zoo, makes you wriggle and weep, pawn the family jewels, laugh out loud, tear down memory lane, and reawaken to the mystery of your own life." Her other books are The Great Failure, My Unexpected Path to Truth, The Essential Writer’s Notebook, Top of My Lungs, and Thunder and Lighting. Truly a master at helping writers, Natalie transforms lives.
