From Alfred Reed’s “The Hounds of Spring” and “Galop” by Dmitri Shostakovich to Karl King’s famous march “Barnum and Bailey’s Favorite,” the University of Mary’s 2011 Spring Band Concert has something to delight almost everyone. “Bring your family and friends — you will not be sorry! Lots of familiar, engaging music, and all in about an hour,” says Dennis Gowen, director of bands and brass at U-Mary. The free public concert, to be held Sunday, March 27, at 3 PM, in Our Lady of the Annunciation Chapel, will feature student musicians from the ensemble.
“We're honored to mark the 100th anniversary of Second Suite in F for Military Band, Op. 28, No. 2 by Gustav Holst with a performance of this timeless composition," says Gowen. "It’s one of the hallmarks of the wind repertoire, and our students have done a marvelous job in capturing the idiomatic nature of each folk song Holst used in composing this work.”
The program will also include:
“Hounds of Spring,” by American composer Alfred Reed, which alerts us that love is in the air in the springtime.
“Trauermusik,” by Richard Wagner, highlighting the 225th anniversary of Carl Maria von Weber, whose remains were returned to Dresden in 1844 by way of a solemn, nocturnal, torchlight procession accompanied by a large wind band.
“Dakota Fanfare,” by Erik Morales, featuring fast flourishes of scales by the trumpets and catchy jazz motives in the woodwinds, the premier performance of this work in North Dakota.
“Galop,” by Dmitri Shostakovich, taken from his operetta Moscow, Cheryomushki, which dealt with the antics of several couples living in a southwest Moscow housing estate.
“Waltz Time with Johann Strauss,” by Johann Strauss II, arranged by John Cacavas, in which several Strauss waltzes are juxtaposed in a creative and evocative way.
“Barnum and Bailey’s Favorite,” by Karl L. King, one of the fastest and most beloved circus marches ever composed.
