The temporary exhibit, Land in Her Own Name, was developed through the work of Elaine Lindgren, a sociologist from North Dakota State University, who spent five years studying 292 cases of women who homesteaded in North Dakota. Through searching land records, collecting information from relatives and interviewing those women homesteaders still living, Lindgren was able to document an important segment of North Dakota history that might easily have been lost. Land in Her Own Name displays a sampling of these women’s stories that create a strong, clear story about our land and people. The exhibit is part of the State Historical Society of North Dakota’s Traveling Interpretative Exhibit Service (T.I.E.S.) and is on loan to the Dickinson Museum Center.
