Capitol Shakespeare presents "Romeo and Juliet" by William Shakespeare at 6:30 p.m., Wednesday - Sunday, July 20-24, 2011 and Children’s Renaissance Faire 3-6 p.m. on Saturday, July 23 on the North Dakota State Capitol Grounds.

Notes from director Erin Drevlow: “Romeo and Juliet” is a daunting task to undertake for any director, let alone a director of my age. More than once I have asked myself, “Are you crazy?” Then I listen to the actors words, and I remember how stunningly beautiful this play is. The poetry of the lines quashes any doubts I have.

In the world we live in, we are fascinated by love and weddings. There are numerous TV shows devoted to all the sides of a wedding. There are shows about cakes, dresses, brides and their insanity, or dream weddings and wedding makeovers. Yet seldom, do we contemplate the years beyond the wedding. There is a wedding, and all is well. In Romeo and Juliet we see the foibles of two young people who see only the romance and desire of a wedding and the “need” to be together without a thought for what will happen after. Thus, our two worlds parallel each other.

The humor and frivolity of this show also drew my attention. Yes, this is a tragedy, but their must also be lightness and fun to balance, or it becomes 2 hours of death and heartbreak. Romance and reality must go hand in hand in order for love to work. I think the casting of actors of all age ranges and training levels has helped to achieve this balance of Romance and Reality. We have the wisdom of age and the brash energy and emotional roller coasters that are teenagers on the same stage. I ask you to laugh, cry, cheer and ultimately fall in love with Shakespeare’s characters and poetry as I have.
