Novelist Tommy Zurhellen will be at Bismarck State College on Thursday, September 22, for a reading from his novel Nazareth, North Dakota. The 7:30 p.m. reading and book-signing is free to the public and will be held in the Prairie Room of the Bismarck State College Student Union.
Zurhellen is a novelist and short story writer. He is on the faculty of Marist College, where he teaches creative writing and serves as director of the Marist Summer Writing Institute and the Writer-in-residence program. Zurhellen grew up in New York City and earned his MFA in creative writing from the University of Alabama. His works of fiction have been published in Quarterly West, Carolina Quarterly, Passages North, South Dakota Review, The MacGuffin, and elsewhere.
Nazareth, North Dakota, Zurhellen's first published novel, is an imaginative retelling of the story of the Messiah, with late twentieth-century western North Dakota as a thin overlay to the action.
Zurhellen's appearance at Bismarck State College is part of the Visiting Writers Series sponsored by the English Discipline of the Arts and Communication Department and funded in part by a grant from the Bismarck State College Foundation.
