BISMARCK, ND — Many people might imagine a tormented afterlife much like Dante depicted — fire, physical torture, and inescapable punishment. But one man’s unique interpretation can be found in a 1944 one-act play written by Jean-Paul Sartre called “No Exit.”
Sartre’s depiction of hell is portrayed through three primary characters who are left in a locked room to torment each other. Their sins and desires are revealed through probing conversation, prodding and just being in each other’s company, and they soon realize that this is their punishment.
“Despite the grim premise, the characters, language and situation are rich with dark humor,” commented Nita Ritzke, play director. Ritzke and University of Mary students will present “No Exit” Thursday, Nov. 3, through Saturday,
Nov 5, at 7:30 p.m., and in a matinee on Sunday, Nov. 6, at 2 p.m. in Arno Gustin Hall.
Tickets are $6 for general admission, $4 for seniors and students. University of Mary students, faculty and staff will be admitted free with the showing of their Mcard. To reserve tickets call (701) 355-8146 during business hours. “No Exit” is appropriate for audiences over 16.
Cast and crew for this play include: (Inez), Julia Cardosa, Modesto, CA; (Estelle), Charlotte Walter, Howard, SD; (Garcin), Caleb Shaffer, Williston, ND; (Valet), Jeremy Hudson, Great Falls, MT; (Light Designer), Tom Hug, Baldwin, ND; (Stage Manager), Jessica Rily, Bismarck, ND; (Costume/Make-up and Hair), Caitlin Nicks, Williston, ND, Brittany Bearsheart, Bismarck, ND, Melissa Gonzalez, Upland, CA; (Light/Sound Ops), Steph Wise, Richardton, ND, Marshall Fryberger, Ritzville, WA; (Properties), Bailie Ziesch, Pettibone, ND.
