Bismarck, ND — As the nation recognizes the contributions of Hispanic Americans in the United States and their historic and significant presence in North America during Hispanic Heritage Month, the University of Mary, America’s Leadership University, is proud to announce that it will welcome acclaimed Spanish artist Maestro Soler to campus on Thursday, Oct. 27.
Known as "Poet of the Guitar” and broadcast on radio and television stations in both Europe and the United States, Soler has been hailed as one of the most notable names in the guitar world. He is the recipient of numerous prizes and awards, including the Golden Key and Honorary Citizen of the city of Corpus Christi, TX (2000); Medal and Diploma of the US Military Academy of West Point (2001); Honorary Membership in the Viva la Música Club, Washington State (2003); Honorary Membership in the Spain Association of the Pacific Northwest (2007); Tribute to Francesc de Paula Soler of the U.S. House of Representatives (2001, 2002, 2004 and 2008); and the Diploma of the Spanish Cultural Association, Boston (2010).
In his appearances at U-Mary, Soler will be commemorating the 75th anniversary of the death of Federico García Lorca, a Spanish poet, dramatist and theater director. Lorca achieved international recognition as an emblematic member of the “Generation of '27.” He is believed to be one of thousands who were summarily shot during the Spanish Civil War.
Maestro Soler’s recital will be divided into two parts: an “Homage to Federico García Lorca,” a panoramic view of Spanish music for guitar and some of the most representative composers for the Latin American guitar, and an international panorama of contemporary guitar music, jazz, swing, be-bop and blues.
Soler will perform as part of the University of Mary’s Fall 2011 Convocation Series on Thursday, Oct. 27, at 11 a.m. in Heskett Hall. There also will be an opportunity to meet the artist and experience his music at a reception on campus at 7 p.m. in Clairmont 106.
