The Visiting Scientists Series presentation with Dr. Robert Bates will be at 7 p.m. in the Bismarck State College National Energy Center of Excellence, room 304.

Whether the idea of beer attracts you or not, this ubiquitous beverage has a fascinating history and tradition which continues to evolve. Initiated by trial and error, in mystery and alchemy, brewing is now based strongly on science and technology. It is surprisingly multi-disciplinary, involving many fields - chemistry, microbiology, biochemistry, engineering (many distinct unit operations), even the behavioral sciences. Utilizing common raw materials and know-how, a brewer can produce remarkably distinctive beers that can vary greatly in quality - good, bad, and indifferent. (Your own experience and taste preference dictate.) Chemists, beer aficionados, novices, or indifferent observers, can benefit from learning more about "liquid bread."

Dr. Robert Bates is a professor emeritus of Food Science at the University of Florida. He received a B.S. from MIT, a M.S. from University of Hawaii, and his Ph.D. from MIT. He has completed short and longterm international assignments in many countries in the Caribbean, Central and South America, and Asia. Dr. Bates has been an ACS tour speaker for over 30 years. Dr. Bates is also considered an oenologist (expert in the study of winemaking).

The Visiting Scientists Series was established to educate young people and the public about science and to inspire students to pursue science as a career. Presentations also contribute resources to educators and technical organizations. BSC sponsors the public series with Bismarck Public Schools, St. Mary's Central High School, Gateway to Science, Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers, North Dakota Society of Professional Engineers, U.S. Geological Survey and University of Mary.

The talk is free and open to the public.
