BISMARCK, ND — The University of Mary, America’s Leadership University, is proud to present the 2011 Fall Band Concert. With this year’s performance on the eve of Halloween, concertgoers will be “treated” to the spooky sounds of Camille Saint-Saëns’ “Danse Macabre” (“Dance of Death”) — a musical piece based on the poem written by Henri Cazalis.

“Dance Macabre’ began as an art song for voice and piano,” said Dennis Gowen, director of bands and conductor of the ensemble, and “Saint-Saëns rescored it as a tone poem for orchestra in 1874. Our fine band transcription by Mark Hindsley faithfully evokes the ethos associated with Cazalis’s ‘Dance of Death’ poem.”

The U-Mary Fall Band Concert is at 3 p.m., Sunday, Oct. 30, in Our Lady of the Annunciation Chapel. It is free and open to the public.

“This piece is a charming three movement work that is a classic in band repertoire,” commented senior music major Sara Wiese from Bismarck, who will conduct Malcolm Arnold’s Prelude, Siciliano and Rondo during the concert. “Each movement conveys a variety of beautiful melodies, ranging in style from stately to exciting. I am very honored to have the opportunity to rehearse and conduct a college-level band, especially when it consists of my peers. I have been learning a great deal from the experience, and can only hope to receive more such honors in the future.”

The concert will open with Rossano Galante’s Resplendent Glory, an impressive overture that features sweeping and lush melodies, brilliant brass fanfares and woodwind flourishes. Other works on the program include the powerful and intense Sparkle by William Harbinson and one of Edward Elgar’s Enigma Variations, the classic Nimrod. The concert’s finale is the Hungarian Dance No. 5 in F# Minor by Johannes Brahms that features a clarinet solo by Wiese.
