As daylight gets a little shorter, one way to brighten things up is with a little jazz! The annual University of Mary Fall Jazz Concert is one evening of toe-tapp’n, finger-snapp’n and hand-clapp’n’ fun that’s sure to add some sparkle to your life.

The University of Mary Jazz Ensemble will present its Fall Concert on Thursday, November 10, 2011, at 7:30 p.m., in Arno Gustin Hall on the University of Mary Campus. This event is free and open to the public.

“The ensemble members are excited to share their program with the community," says Anthony Williams, director of Jazz Studies at the University of Mary. “Jazz has a way of bringing out the best in all of us no matter what the season or chaos we maybe experiencing on a day-to-day basis.”

The concert will feature University of Mary's own Dennis Gowen as a guest artist on trumpet, performing Miles Davis’ part in Gil Evan's arrangement of Kurt Weill's beautiful ballad, "My Ship."

“It’s a pleasure to play once again with the U-Mary Jazz Ensemble,” says Gowen. “The great standard tune, ‘My Ship,’ is a popular song written for the 1941 Broadway musical ‘Lady in the Dark,’ with music by Kurt Weill. Miles Davis later recorded it in 1957 on his ‘Miles Ahead’ album.”

The program will also include performances of original works for the Count Basie and Stan Kenton Orchestras.
