University of Mary brass, percussion and string students have been sharing their love of music all semester, and are gearing up for a performance. The concert, which is free and open to the public, will take place at 3 p.m. on Sunday, Nov. 20, in Arno Gustin Hall. The program will feature a trumpet trio, trumpet quartet, brass quartet, brass ensemble, trombone quartet, trombone ensemble, percussion ensemble, string quartet, and woodwind quartet.

The music was collectively chosen by the students and their directors, Dennis Gowen, Dr. Anthony Williams, Lucas Bernier, Dr. Everaldo Martinez, music professors at America’s Leadership University. Students in the ensembles range from freshmen to seniors.

Audiences will be delighted by the wide range of music, which spans many centuries and includes music from across the globe. The percussion ensemble will provide a taste of Africa through two pieces written by African composers. “Variations on a Ghanaian Theme” is scored for unpitched percussion and is reminiscent of typical African drumming, while “Fission” is written for marimbas and hints at the overlapping melodic lines found traditional mbira music.

The trombone quartet and trombone choir will present a collection of pieces by composers from Poland, England and the United States. The brass ensembles will perform a combination of standard works and contemporary compositions that use unique staging.

Devotees of string quartet will enjoy a performance of Haydn, while the woodwind quartet will premiere a set of variations written by music majors in the Orchestration and Arranging course.

Several of these groups also perform in the community for various functions, and at the annual Christmas at Mary concerts in December.
