Buckle your seatbelts as youth and vigor merge with exceptional artistry and talent in Eric Haugen, 16 year old cello prodigy from Bemidji, MN. Eric is a Junior at Bemidji High School and 2009 winner of the Duluth Superior Concerto Competition. He will play St. Saen's Concerto No. 1 for Cello and Orchestra. Then, warm up in winter with the passion of Beethoven's Symphony No. 7 (also one of the BMSO musicians "Top 3") and Offenbach's famous Overture to "Orpheus in the Underworld" opens the program.

Bismarck-Mandan Symphony presents “Youth & Vigor,” featuring cellist Eric Haugen

Bismarck, N.D. – The Bismarck-Mandan Symphony Orchestra (BMSO) will be lead by Music Director Dr. Beverly Everett in an evening of lively, familiar classical music at the Belle Mehus City Auditorium on Saturday, February 6, 2010. The concert will feature 16-year-old guest cellist, Eric Haugen, in a performance of Camille Saint-Saëns’ Concerto No. 1 for Cello and Orchestra. The Symphony will also present Ludwig van Beethoven’s Symphony No. 7 and Jacques Offenbach’s popular Overture to “Orpheus in the Underworld”.

Haugen was featured as soloist with the Duluth-Superior Symphony Orchestra (Minn.) on its Young People’s Concert in April 2009. Studying cello since the age of three, he has performed with the Bemidji Symphony Orchestra, and he will be featured as soloist in Bemidji in March. A student of Peter Howard (retired principal cello, Saint Paul Chamber Orchestra), he has attended Camp du Nord in Ely, Minnesota, as well as the Bowdoin International Music Festival in Brunswick, Maine. Audiences will be amazed by his exceptional artistry and technical ability as he performs Saint-Saëns’ challenging Concerto No. 1 for Cello and Orchestra. BMSO Music Director Dr. Beverly Everett says, “I have been impressed with Eric's multiple talents for a long time, for in addition to being an exceptionally gifted cellist, he is equally talented on the soccer field, as a vocalist, and as a rock guitarist, too.”

Dr. Everett and the BMSO will thrill you with the energetic Overture to “Orpheus in the Underworld”, perhaps best known for the famous Can-Can dance. Then, warm your soul this winter with Beethoven’s passionate Symphony No. 7, one of BMSO musicians’ “Top 3” favorite works in orchestral repertoire. Beethoven’s music is filled with engaging themes and moving melodies that will invite listeners to experience the joy and hope the composer so well expresses through his symphonies.

This concert is sponsored by MDU Resources, with additional guest artist support provided by U.S. Bank. “Youth & Vigor” will be held at the Belle Mehus City Auditorium on Saturday, February 6 at 7:30 p.m.

Tickets can be purchased by calling 701-258-8345 or at the BMSO office at 215 North 6th Street in Bismarck. Ticket prices are $18-30 for adults, $12-30 for seniors, and $7 for students.

The Bismarck-Mandan Symphony’s 33rd season is entitled “Imagine” and explores the power, possibilities, and presence of music in our lives.
